Inclusive Education Centre

The Inclusive Education Centre (IEC) is a dedicated comprehensive support unit within the mainstream setting at Lake Illawarra High School, designed to meet the unique needs of our diverse student population.

Our unit encompasses nine specialised classes tailored for various learning requirements, ensuring that each student receives the support they need to thrive academically and socially.

Class Offerings

Autism Class

We have two classes specifically designed for students on the autism spectrum. Our approach focuses on fostering social skills, communication, and emotional regulation, enabling students to navigate both academic and social environments effectively.

Intellectual Disabilities (IM) Class

This class caters to students with intellectual disabilities, providing a structured learning environment that promotes independence and life skills, alongside academic learning.

Multi-Categorical (MC) Classes

We have two MC classes that accommodate students with a range of needs. These classes allow for flexible teaching strategies to address the varied learning styles and challenges of our students.

Intensive Learning Support (Mental Health) Classes

We offer four MH classes, three designed for externalisers (students who may exhibit challenging behaviours) and another for internalisers, who may struggle with anxiety and self-regulation. Our focus here is on creating a safe space for emotional expression and developing coping strategies.

Transition Program

Our transition program is a cornerstone of our educational philosophy, offering opportunities for students to grow beyond the classroom. We facilitate workshops, community outings, and vocational training to help students build essential life skills and prepare for future independence. This program is designed to ease the transition to post-school pathways, whether that be further education, training, or employment.

Therapy Dog Program

To enhance the emotional and social wellbeing of our students, we have a therapy dog that visits the support unit weekly. Interactions with our therapy dog provide comfort and can help reduce anxiety, fostering a sense of security and improving overall mental health. This unique aspect of our program contributes to a positive learning environment.

Individualised Learning and Support

At the Inclusive Education Centre, we pride ourselves on offering individualised learning experiences. Each student has a tailored learning plan that takes into account their specific strengths, challenges, and interests. We work alongside parents, carers/guardians, and external services to ensure each student’s plan is current and best supports their needs. Smaller class sizes enable our specialised staff to provide focused attention and support, ensuring that every student feels valued and understood.

Inclusive Sporting Opportunities

We believe in the importance of physical activity and teamwork, which is why we offer inclusive sporting opportunities. Students are encouraged to participate in a variety of modified sports, allowing them to represent the school and engage with their peers and other local schools in a positive and collaborative environment. These activities not only promote physical health but also help build confidence and social skills.

The Inclusive Education Centre is committed to providing a holistic and supportive educational experience for our students, focusing on individual needs, emotional wellbeing, and opportunities for personal growth. Our dedicated staff, tailored programs, and inclusive practices work together to create an enriching learning environment where all students can succeed.

Facilities and Resources

At the Inclusive Education Centre, we prioritise creating supportive facilities and resources that cater to the diverse needs of our students. One of our standout features is the Outdoor Learning Area, which serves as a tranquil retreat for students during break times, or whenever they need a moment to self-regulate. This space is designed to provide a calm and relaxing environment, allowing students to take a break and manage their emotions in a safe setting, fostering their ability to self-regulate effectively.

In addition to these resources, our classrooms are equipped with designated regulation spaces that allow students to engage in calming activities when needed. Furthermore, we actively collaborate with local community organisations, such as the PCYC, to connect our students with worthwhile programs that promote personal growth, physical activity, and social engagement. By integrating these facilities and resources into our program, we aim to create a holistic learning environment that supports the emotional, social, and practical development of all our students.
